Abstract

Long-term monitoring of insect communities has become increasingly important for understanding biodiversity dynamics under rapidly changing land use patterns driven by urbanization, agricultural intensification, industrial development, deforestation, and climate change. Insects are highly sensitive ecological indicators whose diversity, abundance, and community composition reflect environmental alterations and ecosystem health. This study examines the long-term responses of insect communities to land use changes across natural forests, agricultural landscapes, grasslands, urban environments, and peri-urban ecosystems. Standardized monitoring techniques, including sweep netting, pitfall trapping, Malaise trapping, light trapping, and remote sensing-based habitat assessment, are integrated with biodiversity indices and multivariate statistical analyses to evaluate temporal changes in species richness, abundance, functional diversity, and community structure. The study further investigates the influence of vegetation cover, habitat fragmentation, climatic variables, and anthropogenic disturbances on insect population dynamics. Advances in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, machine learning, and ecological modelling are highlighted as effective tools for monitoring landscape transformation and predicting future biodiversity trends. The findings are expected to provide comprehensive insights into ecological resilience, identify indicator species associated with changing land use, and support evidence-based conservation planning and sustainable land management strategies. Long-term ecological datasets generated through continuous monitoring are essential for preserving insect biodiversity, maintaining ecosystem services, and improving adaptive environmental management under ongoing global environmental change.
