Abstract

Chemical disasters in urban areas, particularly megacities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata, pose significant challenges for disaster management frameworks in India. The increased urbanization coupled with the adverse effects of climate change amplifies these risks, leading to higher vulnerabilities and inadequate resilience. This paper explores the compounded risks of chemical disasters in India’s megacities, addressing critical aspects of urban disaster management, infrastructure resilience, and public health. It aims to examine how these cities can better prepare for and mitigate the consequences of chemical disasters exacerbated by climate change, with a focus on policy, governance, and community preparedness.
