Abstract

Ionizing radiation cause damage and even cell death to body tissues. Protective compounds are administered before radiotherapy to reduce the harmful effects of irradiation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of gamma radiation on spermatogenesis in adult rats and the protective role of Para amino propiophenone. -
The results showed significantly reduction of the number of spermatogonia, spermatids, spermatozoa, Sertoli, Leydig, in the group that treated with 2 Gy of gamma rays, compared with the control group (P ≤ 0.05). While the number of primary spermatocytes in the gamma treatment groups compared with the control group increased significantly (P ≤ 0.05). PAPP role as a protector was well represented. It seems that PAPP protects cells and tissues from damaging effects of free radicals under the influence of gamma radiation with low oxygen delivery and hypoxia generation.
